Conservation of Hadrian’s Wall Continues

NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND—Grant money from SITA Trust is being used to rebuild parts of Hadrian’s Wall, which had been placed on English Heritage’s At Risk Register. Damage to the wall and its forts had been caused by erosion and by locals and visitors. Archaeologists conserve sections of the wall with hand tools, lime, and sand mortar. The new stones are a different color so that they will be distinct from the original Roman stones. “It’s fantastic to see the work that has been done so far and more work in progress to conserve this part of the world heritage site for future generations,” said Andrew Saunders of the SITA Trust.
